An overview of Building Regulations Part G and the Code for Sustainable Homes

From April 2010 the new Building Regulations Part G came into force with new and amended requirements.

Part G now includes 6 sections:

  • G1 – Cold water Supply
  • G2 – Water efficiency
  • G3 – Hot water supply, systems and safety
  • G4 – Sanitary conveniences and washing facilities
  • G5 – Bathrooms
  • G6 – Food preparation areas

Part G1 allows the use of unwholesome water for toilet flushing from rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling.

Part G2 focuses on water efficiency, limiting the per person per day consumption in new homes to 125 Litres through efficient bathroom products including dual flush toilets, flow regulated taps/showers and low volume baths.

Part G3 this section looks at prevention of scalding in baths by applying a maximum 48deg water temperature through the installing of thermostatic mixing valves.

Part G4 requires the fitting of sanitary conveniences in the correct quantity for the appropriate sex and age of occupants.

Part G5 residential dwellings are required to provide bathroom facilities including wash basin and either a fixed bath or shower.

Part G6 stipulates the provision of a sink in all areas of food preparation.

The Code for Sustainable Homes.

This code measures the sustainability of a home against nine categories, rating the ‘whole home’ as a complete package. The design categories are:

  • Energy & CO2 Emissions
  • Water
  • Materials
  • Surface Water Run-Off
  • Waste
  • Pollution
  • Health and Well Being
  • Management
  • Ecology

Each category includes a number of environmental issues which have a potential impact on the environment. The issues can be assessed against a performance target and awarded one or more credits. Performance targets are more demanding than the minimum standard needed to satisfy Building Regulations or other legislation. They represent good or best practice, are technically feasible, and can be delivered by the building industry.
