downpipe systems

Circular, square and retangular Alutec downpipe systems are available in eleven different sizes. See the gutter flow capacity table for details of the downpipe variations available for each gutter system.

Jointing
Circular pipe joints with cast sockets should be sealed using caulking foam filler rod, SC911 to a depth of approximately 15mm below top of socket, then filled with Alutec sealant, SC101. Seal square and rectangular pipe joints with cast sockets by pointing sealant to top of the socket joint, filler rod is not required. Ensure the joint between the gutter outlet and pipe is also sealed. When fitting loose cast aluminium pipe sockets, ensure that the pipe ends are cut square. Degrease the inside of the socket and the end of the pipe using solvent cleaner, SC108. Apply a bead of sealant, SC101 into locating groove in the socket. Place the socket into the end of the pipe and using a block of wood or rubber mallet, firmly drive socket onto end of pipe, ensuring socket is driven on to its full depth. 62 x 62mm loose Classic pipe sockets have spigot ends and do not require sealant. Vandal Resistant and Vortex pipe systems do not require joints to be sealed. Always allow a 4-5mm gap between the end of the pipe and the internal shoulder of the pipe socket for thermal expansion.

Downpipe fixing
Pipes with eared sockets are fixed using dome head pipe screws, SC603 (polyester powder coated) or SC221 (natural finish) with wall plugs. If spacer bobbins SC701 are required, use hexagon headed screws, SC604 (polyester powder coated) or SC244 (natural finish). Intermediate pipe brackets are not required if these screw fixings are used. However, brackets should be fixed adjacent to branches, bends and offsets.
Pipes with plain sockets should be fixed with a pipe clip under the pipe collar, and an intermediate pipe clip at 1.5m intervals. It is recommended that dome headed pipe screws, SC603 (polyester powder coated) or SC221 (natural finish) be used with the appropriate wall plugs. If spacer bobbins, SC701 are required, use
hexagon headed screws, SC604 (polyester powder coated) or SC244 (natural finish). Brackets should be fixed adjacent to branches, bends and offsets.

Aligator® Classic Downpipe
62mm square downpipe system is designed specifically to be used in conjunction with the Aligator® Classic gutter system. Pipe sockets are supplied separately with this system and push fit into the end of pipe prior to installation. Where plain pipe sockets are used, a pipe clip should be fixed at the base of each socket. Pipes
should be fixed at 1.5m intervals. Use dome headed pipe screws, SC231, with appropriate wall plugs. Brackets should also be fixed adjacent to branches, bends and offsets. It is recommended to seal the pipe joint to the gutter outlet and offset bends with SC101 sealant..

Vandal resistant pipes
This system must be installed in sequence from top to bottom, each fixing plate being concealed by the pipe below. Fix using countersunk screws, SC241 with wall plugs. Bends and branches are supplied complete with loose fixing plates, for site fixing to any face, depending on the handing required. Pipe offcuts can be used by first fitting an internal joint spigot, RVR320, RVR120 or RVR420 and sealing with Alutec sealant, SC101.
Then attach the fixing plate RVR380, RVR180 or RVR480. Connections to gutter outlets or hoppers can only be made via a cast pipe socket, RSR320NE, RSR120NE or RSR420NE fitted to the plain end of the pipe or pipe fitting. Standard adjustable eaves offsets already incorporate a socket. It is advised that fixed offsets are made to precise site dimensions. These are available made to order, the required dimensions should be conveyed with the order (see page 32).

Hoppers
Hoppers should be fixed with pipe screws, SC221 (polyester powder coated, SC603) and wall plugs. When connecting hoppers to Vandal Resistant pipe an appropriate fixed offset with plain cast socket, will be required to align the hopper outlet with pipe.

Drain connections
For transition between circular aluminum pipe and PVCu drainage pipes, use the nearest size PVCu reducer/socket and seal the gap with a bead of sealant. For transition between circular aluminum pipe and clay drain pipe it is recommended that a universal size clayware pipe coupler is used. For transitions between square aluminium pipe and clay drain or PVCu drain pipes, use a square to 110mm diameter round drain adaptor RSR370, RSR170 or RSR470 which incorporates a slip socket connection for connecting between two fixed points. It will be necessary to recess the drain socket into the wall by approximately 10mm to maintain a flush fit for the aluminium pipe.
